Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA)

Provided by Green Ribbons

Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA) is a recognised 12-hour programme for workplaces, organisations and community groups. It helps participants recognise when someone may be experiencing mental health distress, approach a supportive conversation, listen without judgement and offer appropriate initial help until further or professional support is available. The course explores mental health problems, recovery, stigma and discrimination, alcohol and drugs, suicide intervention and listening skills. Participants also learn the five-step SMHFA approach and the boundaries of the Mental Health First Aider role. Green Ribbons delivers the programme in person through a qualified SMHFA instructor. The 12 hours can be arranged as two full days or shorter sessions to suit the group.
